My own experience showed me that moving abroad is about much more than paperwork or real estate. It is about building a life. It is about community, rhythm, belonging, and learning how everyday life actually works once the excitement settles into reality.

One of the most powerful examples of that came through my mother’s experience. When she lived in the United States, she had friends, but mostly kept to herself. In Italy, her life opened up in an entirely different way. She now has close friendships with both Italians and expats from around the world. She is included in dinners, shopping trips, and everyday plans. Her Italian neighbors know she lives alone, and they often bring her dinner, figs from their trees, or vegetables from their gardens. She is happier than she has ever been — and far less isolated.

That kind of change is hard to measure on paper, but it matters deeply.
